The IJDb globe applet v2.0

(sorry, Java is not enabled on your browser) The globe applet illustrated on the left is used by the IJDb as a tool for illustrating geographic data. The first version of this applet illustrated the location of juggling clubs on the globe as little red 'pins', however I soon realised that with further modification, this applet could be used to pin-point a location, and search the database for the clubs (or other items) closest to that point. I have continued to develop this applet to enable the user to search for all types of information within this site.

This application has a very long history, having started life in the 1960s. For a full account of this applets history, please look at Tom's Java page, where I found the Globe applet (and Tom was kind enough to have provided the full source code on his page).

History

The IJDb globe applet has evolved as follows.

Version 2.10:

  • Map data updated by Jason Lee Quinn to remove redundant data and improve coastlines.
  • An Ant build file has been added to create a JAR archive.

Version 2.00:

  • The code has been cleaned up and refactored.
  • The land is now filled so that it looks more like solid land!
  • The pins on the globe are now collected into classes

Version 1.00: (Changes made to Tom's globe applet)

  • Globe rotation and zoom using mouse-clicks
  • Double-buffering
  • The illustration of geographic data
  • A means of passing the current globe position to another page so that geographic location databases can be searched.

Version 0.1:
For the complete applet history, before it was adopted by this site, please refer to the source files.

Licence

Anyone is welcome to use this version of the globe applet, provided that you abide by the following:
  • Share your source with others freely
  • Let me know you're using it
  • Give me credit, and all the other pioneers, if you use the data or algorithms

Other sites using this code

Since I started using this applet on the IJDb a number of other sites have started using it. A number of people have also developed their own variants of the applet. The following is a brief list of some of the more interesting uses of the applet:
