10. What does ... mean? (juggling jargon)

Cascade - one of the most basic juggling patterns. Done with an odd number of juggling props they are thrown from each hand in turn in a horizontal figure of eight pattern.

Fountain - a pattern for even numbers, simply 2 props in each hand. Or 3 in each hand. Or 4. But the props never change hands.

Shower- a juggling pattern for any number of props. All the balls travel in a big circle. One hand throws all the balls high in the air, the other hand catches them all and makes a very quick pass back to the first hand. This is the pattern that 99% of all cartoon characters juggle.

Synchronous, synch - both hands throw at once.

Asynchronous, asynch - the hands throw in turn.

Prop, props, juggling props - equipment that the jugglers throw up. Balls, clubs and rings being the most popular.

Numbers juggling - a skill which simply involves juggling more balls/clubs/rings than most jugglers bother learning. There is no set number of objects that have to be juggled before it is considered numbers juggling, it is usually related to the skill needed for that prop. With rings and balls numbers juggling would start at around 6 or 7, many people can do tricks with 5 balls but not many can do tricks with 6. Clubs are much harder to juggle so numbers club juggling would start at about 5. Basketballs are very big and not many people juggle them, numbers basketball juggling starts at 3.

Joggling - running and juggling at the same time. Some American jugglers take this very seriously but most people look at it as a kind of glorified egg and spoon race.

Flash, flashing - flashing is where you make the same amount of throws and catches as the amount of props you have. If you flash 3 balls you make 3 throws and 3 catches. Flashing 4 balls is 4 throws and 4 catches. At lower numbers, a flash isn't considered much of an achievement, just a step on the way to a nice juggling pattern. Jugglers usually use the term "flash" when describing someone who can make 7, 8, 9 or more catches with 7, 8, 9 or more balls but can't yet juggle them for much longer.

Qualifying, qualifying run, qualifying juggle - This is like a double flash. It is when you can make twice as many throws and catches than amount of objects you are juggling. So, to qualify 6 balls you have to make 12 throws and 12 catches. This term came about during numbers juggling competitions, a qualifying run being needed with one number before being allowed to compete with the next, higher number. By this stage most people just count their personal records by numbers of catches.

A juggle - some people don't consider you can actually "juggle" a number of objects until you can qualify it. Until then they say you have "got more than a flash" or "not quite juggled it". This causes some confusion, attaching another meaning to the word "juggle".

Wimpy - a pattern for even numbers where the props are thrown synchronously, each to the opposite hand, crossing at the top of the pattern.

Mills Mess - a popular trick where the juggler crosses and uncrosses their hands under the balls. Theoretically, it can be done with any amount of any prop but not many people can do it with more than 5 balls or 4 clubs, most people sticking to the 3 balls mills mess.

Multiplex - a multiplex throw is when two or more balls are thrown at the same time from one hand, rather than one at time like in a normal juggling pattern.
