Plus there appear to be three blacks and two cyans in the translation progress chart. Pink? Orange? Purple? Lilac?
--
The Void

Hi Colin,

When someone posts a new thread to DevFor, the post appears with the message 'Post a new message' underneath it, which is actually the link to reply to the originating message of the thread. Can this be changed to 'Post a reply' just like all the other messages in the thread? It's a tad confusing at the moment.

Cheers.

--
Jay
--
Jay Linn

It's not a big problem, but I get quite a few spammed events listings too, normally updates rather than new submissions.

Because there is no particular pattern to them, my guess is that they are coming from human-operated spam farms which CAPTCHAs can't defeat, which if so means we just have to put up with 'em.
Tricks Record Database

Well ... not quite surrounded, there's a gap just over ... oh, never mind, it just got filled by someone in management.

That doco is badly worded, "relative" was a poor word choice, but I believe what it is trying to say is the number of seconds between the Unix epoch and either "now" or the supplied time. Next question is what timezone is "now" in and is it converted to UTC before the calculation is made ?

I guess it's a bit moot anyway until the RSS script is restored.
--
Kelhoon

The timestamps are written by the database engine automatically on record creation, so it's a server config issue about what gets written in there.

It's possible that the PHP engine is localizing to German time automatically, I don't know what it does.

For an example of PHP's crapness:

Convert a timestamp (integer) to a readable string:
string strftime ( string $format [, int $timestamp ] )

Convert a readable string to a timestamp
array strptime ( string $date , string $format )

.. but notice, it returns an array, not an integer!
.. and it's not available in php under windows!

Or the nonsense writeup of strtotime:

int strtotime ( string $time [, int $now ] )

"The function expects to be given a string containing a US English date format and will try to parse that format into a Unix timestamp (the number of seconds since January 1 1970 00:00:00 GMT), relative to the timestamp given in now , or the current time if now is not supplied. "

How the hell can you have "the number of seconds since January 1 1970 00:00:00 GMT, relative to X" ?

Are we not surrounded by IDIOTS?!
--
Sweavo

Ah, German time, that clarifies it.

Silly me thinking it was GMT just because it displays "GMT" at the end of the date/time.

Is the RSS feed not just getting the timestamp from the database entries ? or it is but the timestamps aren't stored as UTC ? or they are but the PHP.ini default timezone is Germany ?

Personally, I think storing the timestamps as UTC is best, timezones and DST are really just display time issues. UTC is a great base to work from, it's one of the points of it's existence really. If your chatroom user profile included your timezone (check the prayers) then the live room could display the time appropriate for the user by using that info. The RSS feed doesn't know your timezone, so displaying it as UTC would be the most sensible default.

Failing that, the quickest fix would be for the RSS feed (when you recover it) to just display the correct timezone against the date/time stamp it is using. Not my favourite solution though.

What sucks about the PHP date/time functions ? what do you think is missing/broken ? (I am curious as I don't know much about PHP)

As long as the server is kept up to date with timezone info (tzdata), you shouldn't have to worry about or code for different countries TZ/DST rule changes, they should be 'automagic'.

Date/Time is a frequent pain in the proverbial. There are an amazing number of ways to do it "wrong", hence my multitude of suggestions for what might be "wrong".
--
Kelhoon

Good catch! In fact this is an old, ill-thought-out bit of code that is supposed to show UK time. All it does is add an offset to the server's time. That offste defaults to zero, and the server recently went to Europe, so it's showing European DST right now.

It's a bit of a pain in the ass right now, ideally it would show the time local to the individual user, but the US recently changed their DST rules and PHP's date functions are really sucky, so I don't see it getting fixed any time soon.

Do you get odd behavior in the event of timestamps going backwards? (e.g. in feed reader or whatever?) if so, then that's a case for not supporting DST.
--
Sweavo

I was supposed to zip the jugglewiki directory and its contents to send to Jack. However, I somehow managed to gzip every single file within jugglewiki individually.

It is fixed now.

97531

See.
--
Colin E.

I started to write something about "how to add your video to the database", but then wondered how reasonable it would be in a "rec.juggling" FAQ, rather than a "IJDb" FAQ. It seemed a bit too pluggy. YMMV.
--
The Void

Well, just a few edits to bring a couple of things up to date. It can be posted to RJ if anyone's up for dealing with the torrent of mostly irrelevant replies ;-)

=====

rec.juggling FAQ
These are the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the rec.juggling newsgroup. Are there any juggling videos I can watch on the internet?
========================================================================

#####
1. What is rec.juggling?
The internet encompasses all kinds of data transfer between computers, the most widely used being the World-Wide Web (WWW). However long before the WWW was invented, text-only online discussion forums, or Usenet, were widely used. Usenet carries many thousands of discussion forums, and rec.juggling is one of them.
#####
2. How can I read/post to rec.juggling?
Most good Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will give you access to Usenet news, all you need is a news-reader, and again most ISPs will provide you with one. However, Usenet has not experienced the same growth in popularity as the rest of the web. Therefore a number of web-based Usenet portals have been created to give easier access to the news service.

The Internet Juggling Database provides both a reading and posting service for rec.juggling:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/news/

The Juggling Information Service provides read-only access to rec.juggling. However, it includes all the posts made to rec.juggling, including the very first message!

http://www.juggling.org/rj/

Google have recently created a portal which provides access to many Usenet newsgroups, including rec.juggling:

http://groups.google.com/
#####
3. Are there things I can and cannot say on rec.juggling?
In common with all Usenet newsgroups, what is and is not acceptable on rec.juggling is determined by the people who post to the group. If you post something which is not acceptable - someone will let you know about it!

For general Usenet 'Netiquette' guidelines have a look at the following:

http://unix1.sncc.lsu.edu/internet/usenet/usenet-etiquette.html

A few specific guidelines for rec.juggling are as follows:

- rec.juggling is primarily an English language newsgroup.
- The posting of photos and other binary or attached files is NOT acceptable.
- Advertising is not acceptable.
- rec.juggling is intended to be a discussion forum for juggling and other circus skills (e.g. diabolo, devil-stick etc...)

However, do not let any of these 'rules' discourage you from joining the fun. Nearly everyone has made mistakes - but these are quickly forgotten.

#####
4. Are there any good juggling web sites?
There are numerous web sites which cover all aspects of juggling. However, the two most notable web sites are the Internet Juggling Database (IJDb) and the Juggling Information Service (JIS):

http://www.jugglingdb.com (IJDb)
http://www.juggling.org (JIS)

Each of these sites contains vast amounts of juggling information and each are referenced by this FAQ a number of times. Search engines are always a good starting point for finding other juggling web sites (for example try Google, http://www.google.com), you will also find a growing database of juggling web sites on the IJDb:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/links/
#####
5. Why is the Juggling Information Service so out of date?
The Juggling Information Service (www.juggling.org) is probably the most comprehensive juggling site on the web containing links to vendors, clubs, home pages, juggling hints, videos, software, and just about anything you can think of related to the world of juggling. Unfortunately it has not been updated in quite some time. The reason is that Barry Bakalor, who created and owns the site, is busy with his own business and cannot keep up with changes. He has also been unable to use the numerous offers of help made to him.
#####
6. How does David Bowie do that cool crystal ball manipulation in the film Labyrinth?
See question #7
#####
7. What is contact juggling?
"Contact" Juggling is the art manipulating balls so that they roll across, around, and over your body. In other words, the balls always remain in contact with your body. Although the term "contact juggling" is relatively new, rolling a ball across, around and over one's body is not. Paul Cinquevalli, for instance, a juggler at the turn of the 20th century, performed a routine where he wore a green felt jacket that had billiard "pockets" sewn onto it. He would manipulate billiard balls over his body and land them in the pockets.

Today, Michael Moschen is the preeminent "contact" juggler. He has a routine where he manipulates up to four crystal balls in each hand and gradually lets each ball go until he is manipulating only one ball. Mr. Moschen is also known for his work in the movie Labyrinth where he acted as the hands of David Bowie doing his crystal ball routine (he did the routine blind and with the aid of a monitor. Mr. Moschen was featured on the PBS Series "Great Performances" in the early 1990's. This video is entitled "In Motion with Michael Moschen" and is available from a number of juggling vendors. More recently, Mr. Moschen developed a piece for Cirque de Soleil. Mr. Steve Ragatz, rec.juggler, performs in this piece.
#####
8. What do all those funny numbers mean?
They are site swaps.

Site swaps are strings of numbers, each number refers to how high a throw is in relation to others in the pattern. Even numbers are thrown to the same hand, odd numbers are thrown across to the other hand. The numbers then, tell the right hand what to do, then the left, the right, etc. For example:

3 The three object cascade

The pattern repeats over and over again. So rather than writing "...33333..." we just write "3." Similarly:

4 The 4 object fountain pattern (alternating)
5 The 5 object cascade pattern
5 1 The 3 object non-synchronous shower (1 is a quick pass from hand to hand)

For a more thorough treatment of siteswaps, take a look at some of these the online resources:

http://www.juggling.org/help/siteswap/

One of the most well known siteswap jugglers, Ben Beever, has written an extensive book on the subject. 'Siteswap Ben's Guide to Juggling Patterns' is some 70 pages in length and is currently being formatted for online viewing:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/articles/index.php?id=33

Juggling simulations are a popular method for viewing siteswap patterns. There are freeware viewers available for most computer platforms and OSs:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/articles/index.php?id=7
http://www.juggling.org/programs/
#####
9. Are there any organizations for jugglers?
Of course. The International Jugglers' Association (IJA) has nearly 3,000 members in several countries, although most are in the US. It publishes the 'Juggle' magazine, an annual membership roster, and hosts a large annual festival, including many shows and competitions, and more:

http://www.juggle.org/

The European Juggling Association was created to host a large annual juggling convention in Europe:

http://www.eja.net/

There are also other organisations, most of which are listed on the following pages:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/links/index.php?child=25
http://www.juggling.org/orgs/
#####
10. How can I learn to juggle five balls?
Probably your best bet for learning five balls is to find a good 5 ball juggler and have her or him teach you. Also, study good five ball jugglers when they ply their craft, notice how effortlessly smooth the pattern is, how high the balls go, how the balls cross.

If you can't find a five ball juggler, you can practice several tricks that will help you learn five balls. The first is the three ball flash. Out of a three ball cascade, throw all of the balls into the air, then catch them as them come down and resume your cascade. It might be helpful to practice throwing one ball high, back and forth, so that you can get used to the higher throws that are necessary for juggling five balls. Another valuable trick is the three ball chase, or snake. Start with three balls in either hand, then throw them to the other hand in a one, two, three pattern and then catch them in the opposite hand, one, two, three. Make sure that your throws are consistent and follow each other in nice high arcs (those of you who've been to St. Louis can visualize the Gateway Arch). Then repeat the pattern, throwing the balls one, two, three, back to your original hand. Once your arcs are solid, you can keep the pattern going. Say you're starting with your right hand, throw the balls one, two, three, to your left hand. Your left hand will catch the first ball, then cascade it back to your right hand, under ball two. You will, similarly, cascade ball two under ball three, and then ball three will be cascaded back.

http://www.juggling.org/help/numbers/5-balls/
http://www.jugglingdb.com/articles/index.php?id=19

Be aware that juggling five balls is much more difficult than juggling four, so don't be disappointed by an apparent lack of progress at the start. It typically takes jugglers six to eighteen months of regular practice to learn this pattern.

For those wishing to pursue higher numbers, there are a few good articles which you may find useful:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/articles/index.php?id=20
http://www.jugglingdb.com/articles/index.php?id=13
http://www.jugglingdb.com/articles/index.php?id=31
#####
11. Is there a juggling club that meets near me?
The definitive juggling club listing is found on the IJDb. It has over 350 juggling clubs listed by Country and geographic position:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/clubs/

You can use the interactive globe to quickly locate your nearest club:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/clubs/globe.php

If you know of any juggling club which is not listed on this site - please submit it, or if any club listed on this site which no longer meets or meets at a different time or place, please submit an update.
#####
12. Where can I buy juggling props?
There are a small number of high-street stores which stock juggling equipment. The IJDb has a list of known vendors sorted by Country:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/vendors/

There is also a growing number of online juggling equipment vendors:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/links/index.php?parent=2

You can also read reviews of some products on the IJDb's online shop pages:
http://www.jugglingdb.com/shop/
#####
13. I'm about to buy my first set of clubs. What sort should I buy?
This is a question that no one but you can answer. Club selection is
largely a matter of personal preference and almost every kind of club
has its advocates. Your best bet is to visit a juggling group in your
area and ask if you can try out some gear. Most jugglers are more than
happy to share both equipment and opinions if approached politely.

However, we understand that the world is a big place and that there
may not be a grop in your area. Here then are a few things to consider
and some general recommendations.

(a) How much are you willing to spend?

Some people recommend getting an inexpensive set of clubs to start.
That way if you decide that club juggling isn't your thing you won't
have wasted very much money. Also, as you become a better club juggler
your taste in clubs will likely change; if your first set didn't cost
too much then you won't feel bad when you abandon them for the ones
you really want.

That said, the consensus on rec.juggling is that you'll be better off
getting a good set of clubs to start with. Good clubs are generally
easier to learn with and much more pleasant to juggle, so if you start
with a good set you're much more likely stick with it. This means we
end up with more people to pass with, which is a Good Thing(tm).

(b) You are going to be passing clubs, aren't you?

As Isaac Orr is fond of saying, passing clubs is "One of the most fun
things two people can do without taking their clothes off." If there
are any other jugglers in your area that you'll likely be passing
with, find out what clubs they use and buy something similar. It's
easier to pass when the clubs you're using aren't wildly different
from one another or from what you're used to.

(c) Length and weight

Most quality clubs are 210-280 grams (7.5-10 oz) in weight and 50-52
cm (19.5-20.5") in length. Some clubs sold as "beginners" or
"children's" clubs are significantly shorter and lighter than this.
They should normally be avoided by all but the smallest jugglers.

(d) Multi-piece ("composite") clubs --- recommended

The most popular clubs among rec.juggling posters are the good-quality
multi-piece juggling clubs made by Beard, Dube, Henrys, Play, Renegade
and Todd Smith. See the answer to FAQ question 11 for links to these
manufacturers and many vendors who resell their products.

Multi-piece clubs are built around a hardwood dowel or plastic pipe
(for rigidity) and usually include a hollow plastic bell or bulb (the
big bit of the club), a springy handle (which makes them more
comfortable to catch) and foam rubber knobs and end caps (which
protect the club when it falls to the floor and reduce the damage when
you inadvertently whack yourself in the face).

Multi-piece clubs come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Most
common are the relatively narrow "European" style clubs like the Beard
Beach, Euro or Circus; Henrys Classic, Delphin, Pirouette or Circus;
Dube Euro; Play PX3; Renegade 85 mm; and Todd Smith Euro, Satellite or
Phantom. If you like a fatter-bodied club you might consider the Dube
Phatboyz; Henrys Albatross; Renegade 95 mm, 105 mm or Fathead; and
Todd Smith Thumper. For something thinner and more than a bit
different, you might look at the Beard Radical Fish.

One way to get a decent set of clubs without spending a fortune is to
buy the undecorated or "training" version of one of the brands listed
above. These juggle almost exactly the same as the decorated versions
but typically cost about US$5 less per club.

(e) One-piece ("unibody") clubs --- not recommended for beginners

One-piece clubs are made of a single piece of hollow, molded plastic
and generally fall into two categories, neither of which is
recommended for beginners.

The first category are the relatively inexpensive clubs you can find
in magic shops and toy stores, and that you might buy your neice for
her birthday if you didn't like her very much. Examples are Todd Smith
Elans, Beard Flares, and Jugglebugs. These tend to be hard on the
hands (since the handles are hard plastic) and fairly unpleasant to
juggle (since they are not very well balanced). Most rec.jugglers
would recommend avoiding them in any circumstances, though many of us
will admit to having learned using them.

The other category are the higher-priced Airflite and Klassic American
clubs made by Dube. These are well-balanced and quite pleasant to
juggle once you have learned to throw and catch them well; however,
they have very hard handles and can be painful to catch until you
develop good technique. They are widely used by professionals who like
a solid club that is unlikely to break under heavy use or in shipment.
#####
14. Where can I learn about the history of juggling?
Use the search tool of the JIS and look for "history". It will find references in over 400 files, including:

http://www.juggling.org/museum/
http://www.juggling.org/papers/
http://www.juggling.org/books/alvarez/
http://www.juggling.org/books/artists/history.html
http://www.juggling.org/fame/
http://www.juggling.org/jw/87/2/
http://www.jugglingdb.com/articles/index.php?id=14
#####
15. How many people in the world can juggle 'n' balls?
Unfortunately there is not enough reliable data available on which an estimate can be based. Probably the best estimate which can be made comes from a survey which Bill Giduz conducting each year. He asks a large number of Davidson College Freshman whether they can juggle in order to chart trends from year to year:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/news/article.php?id=

These results imply that about 20% of young, educated americans can juggle. However, it would be ludicrous to assume that these data imply that 20% of people worldwide can juggle because it is a very biased survey. Likewise, all other estimates based on similarly small and biased samples should be treated with caution.
#####
16. What is the current world record for 'n' balls/clubs/rings/rubber chickens?
Unfortunately the Guinness Book of Records seems to have lost interest in juggling world records. However, a group, 'JIS Committee on Numbers Juggling', has been operating for many years and are seen by most jugglers as the official keepers of juggling records:

http://www.juggling.org/records/records.html

There are also many unofficial record pages, however the most official of these unofficial pages(!) is the following:

http://www.jugglingdb.com/records/index.php which evolved from a site called Bogleg.
#####17.
Just started getting problems with the juggleanim popup from r.j. I'm unable to load the juggleanimapplet.class from /jugglewiki/juggleanim/classes

Has the directory been removed in preparation for a possible wiki relocate? If so it might be an idea for the applet to reside somewhere more related to ijdb - rather than the wiki...

Anyone else getting this problem?

Ewano
--
Ewano

It's been two (busy) weeks but I'm almost done with the article I promised. Here's a few more questions about it.

For the animations, can I use the following (hopefully it's visible):

Java disabled. Cannot display animation.

([66x],4)(2,2x)

How about if I wanted a link to a pop-up window of the same pattern?

I can probably assume that for the final html-page I only need to worry about the body?

Would it be difficult to add a section "Articles by" in my user profile?

That's it for now.

--

(btw, oon mä varmaan joskus ennenkin tänne skriivaillu.)

(btw, oon mä varmaan joskus ennenkin tänne skriivaillu.)
--
Miika

Hi Void,

Thanks for the addition. Do you think the FAQ really needs posting? Despite the fact that it has not been posted for more than 2 years, how frequently are these questions still asked?

Although, I can imagine that it would be potentially useful with quite a thorough re-write.

Regards,
--
Colin E.

There was some talk of re-writing the FAQ a while back. I'll add:

17.
