An Interview with Jason Garfield

malabarismo.net - 20th January, 2002.

Name: Jason Garfield
Age: 27
Place where you are living now: Encino, CA

When did you realize that you were going to work as a juggler?Did you want to be anything else (like a dentist, or a porno star?)

The real question is when will I realize that I will no longer work as a juggler-
as soon as possible.

What is your opinion about Anthony Gatto and Bruce Sarafian?

Anthony Gatto- Good juggler Bruce Sarafian- No opinion

Do you prefer number juggling,(like eleven balls, siteswaps), or an artistic juggling?

Numbers.

When you were very young, did your friends understand what was juggling or did they think that you were training to be a clown or something?

Only my friends understood because they were the only ones I wasted my time explaining it to. Everybody else thought differently and could have kissed my ass in the process.

How many people have you punched because they told you that you were a clown?

9

How do you feel when a club or a ring falls?

Like punching the person nearby who says,"That was better than I could do" Really, ya think?

Do you think that some or all the people in the IJA are not so open minded to understand the jokes?

Fuck 'em.

Does your unusual attitude influence the final score in the championships?

It shouldn't if the judges remain professional. So probably.

Have you ever been to any south american juggle festival? Did you know that they exist in south america?

I never thought about it. I was just in South America. I noticed that some street beggers would wait for traffic to stop, put on a clown nose and juggle in the street for the cars hoping for tips. I don't think I want to go to that guy's juggling club.

What is Juggle kung fu master, how are the sales going??? What brought you more money, selling the medals or selling your movies?

Juggling Kung Fu Master is an epic sage that parody's the IJA juggling competitions. (For a description of the movie, refer to my website) Sales are through Todd Smith and Serious juggling. Serious juggling seems to be selling them every now and then. I sold quite a few when it first came out and at the convention in Madison. Now the sales appear to be slowing. The medals didn't generate enough income to be considered for comparison to my movie sales.

The kickmovie.avi clip is very hard to do. Can you do that trick always or you were lucky? What was harder to learn?: That trick or the eat an apple trick?

The kickmovie I did just for the video. I worked on it for about an hour one day, and then the next day shot the video in about an hour and a half. I did the tricks many times, but only a few times the way I wanted them to look. According to public knowledge, the eat the apple trick is by far the most difficult juggling trick of all time.

What do you think about Devil Stick, Diabolo,Contact juggling and mimes?

I try not to think about those things.

Anything else to say?

The world will be a better place once everybody follows the rules posted on my rules of life page, which will be updated soon.

My Take
Seems to be a jerk not through his stage show but his interviews. Incredible skills but ugly and shaky to watch. Not in the same league as Gatto in terms of style, flawlessness, or skill.

Re: My Take
I just want to say I'm sorry to Jason Garfield. I've tried posting comments about how he is a fake using his WJF company to scam people out of their money and give himself and his friends the prize money. If that's true or otherwise, the fact is that he did break some work records in juggling and deserves to be respected. I was angry at him since in 2004 he told me I couldn't juggle in his convention with my costume on and with certain props I practice with and personally I didn't think he should be allowed to do that to anyone. But seeing as he keeps removing my post and it all is for naught, I guess it's better to just avoid insulting him and post my simple apology. Best of luck to him and his competition style juggling.

It's not Jason Garfield deleting your posts...

How about writing an article about your accusations? maybe you could state some sources and give some proof?

Jason...
No one will argue that Jason Garfield's an incredible juggler, he's well-practiced and passionate about what he does. However, Jason's attitude causes me to reconsider what it is that is admirable about being a juggling figure. I wouldn't want to be seen as an angry and over-competitive juggler who's needlessly critical of others' styles and abilities, and I hope most others wouldn't want to be seen that way either. So, despite Jason's superior technical ability as a juggler, I don't admire him. And I think he could be a much happier person, and do the juggling world a huge amount of good is he settled down a bit. There's a ton of potential for him to do greater things, but for the time being it's all walled up in bitterness. I wish him the best though, and still think he's amazing to watch.
Ps. The president of my school's juggling club has met Jason, and he says he's actually a really nice guy.

Sniff. I happen to like diabo...
Sniff. I happen to like diabolo, devil sticks, and contact juggling. Mimes though...

Re: Sniff. I happen to like diabo...
Actually, good mimes are really cool. The operative adjective here is good. Bad mimes are bad. There are also many bad mimes. Don't judge all mimes by the bad ones you've seen. Similarly, don't judge all jugglers by the street hacks you've see. Go check out a video by Marcel Morceau; he is amazingly skilled. That being said, mime is fairly different from juggling. Both can be skilled performance arts, but that's where the similarity ends.

I've never gotten into diablo or devil sticks. I tried devil sticks once and didn't like it. I never got the opportunity to try a diablo; I'm not sure I have a place to practice it either. I think Jason's comment was more that he doesn't do those props, rather than that he thinks badly of others who do them. The WJF does have competitions for these kinds of props, so he can't think too badly of them. So, don't fret the comment. Of course, all of Jason's comments should be taken will a large helping of salt anyway.

re: "I think Jason's comment was more that he doesn't do those props, rather than that he thinks badly of others who do them."

Well your interpretation was less in keeping with his bad boy trademark. I think the comment at least was intended to imply that he thinks badly of those who do them. That's his schtick.

Have We Met?
Hey Jason,
I think we met on the m/s Westerdam in '97, I was a cruise staff member helping out with the "Benji Hill and Jason" juggling show. Was that Jason you? If so, it was so nice to see you're still around!
Take care!

Re: a lot of you guys are just jea...
Jason Garfield's good, but the attitude is annoying. He needs to be humbled. I look at his videos for inspiration, it's awesome. But really, think of how small humans are. Humans shouldn't even begin to think that they're even remotely good at anything.

Re: a lot of you guys are just jea...
I don't like him. He keeps removing my posts. I think he is a scam artist and a routine thief hack that doesn't do a single thing he yells that everyone else should do. A total moronic socially retarded and inept person whom I will admit, knows how to juggle (but moves his feet way too much to win a compeition unless it's his own WJF rigged money laundering system.)

"Jason Garfield is the best juggler I have ever known."

Sure but...
once saw the finals of an international magician's convention where the professionals in the audience voted on the magician of the year, with a performance by each of the nominees. The winner was a guy who did a three-ring linking rings act. This is probably one of the first pieces of magic apparatus every young magician starts with. Every performer in that room knew how it was done. And yet, the gentleman's performance style and presentation of the illusion was so engaging and so convincing that he was voted better than anyone else in the world at the art of magic.

Strive to be like that magician, that comedian, that morning DJ when you give a webinar. Sure, get your technical skills worked out as a foundation (knowledge of the subject, supporting evidence, and so on). But learn how to make your presentation a collaborative undertaking with your audience instead of an emotionless demonstration of your brilliance. You'll be more effective and you won't have to grumble about how people don't appreciate you.

Re: Sure but...
I'm sorry, but after I saw the word "webinar" I completely disregarded your post.
