Basic Volleyclub Rules

Sam Vines, Mike Armstrong and Pieter Jenniskens. - 1st January, 1990.

TEAMS

1. A team consists of three players.

STARTING THE GAME

2. A coin toss will be done between the two opposing captains. The winner has the choice of serving the first set or choosing which half of the court to start on. At the beginning of the second set the roles are reversed. The coin toss will be done at the beginning of the third set with the winner getting the same options as above.

SCORING REGULATIONS

3. Whenever a member of one team makes a "fault" the opposing team scores one point.

4. A set is over when one team scores 15 points. The winning team must have at least a two-point advantage. If a 14-14 score exists, play will continue until one team wins by two points.

5. A match shall consist of a best two out of three sets.

6. Any team can score. The team scoring the last point serves the next point.

SERVING REGULATIONS

7. The serve is the act of putting the club into play by the right back-row player who starts a 3 club cascade and throws the designated (volley-)club from the service zone (anywhere beyond the back line and within the two sidelines). Before serving the server must call "service"; this call marks the start of the point and brings all other rules into play.

8. Serves must be underhand throws.

9. Blocking the serve is illegal.

10. Only one serve is allowed. Faults on the serve may occur when:

  1. volleyclub touches net or teammate.
  2. volleyclub is passed under the net.
  3. volleyclub goes out of bounds.

11. The serve is out-of-bounds if it touches any surface, object (except a receiving team player’s body) or ground outside the court without first being touched by a member of the receiving team.

12. On change of serve, all players shall rotate clockwise (to the right in front line and left in second line). The player in the front line right position (right forward) becomes the next server. Positions of players may be changed only after a completed set. If you do not start the set with the serve, you rotate before the first time you serve.

LEGAL & ILLEGAL THROWS

13. The volleyclub may be touched by each player only once. Self passes with the volleyclub are not allowed.

FAULTS

14. The following are faults if they occur while the volleyclub is in play:

  1. The volleyclub touches any surface, object or ground outside the court without first being touched by a member of the receiving team. The volleyclub may be played from out-of-bounds from your territory only.
  2. A player touching the opponent's court.
  3. A player touching net.
  4. A player's hand or hands going over the net into the opponents' court.
  5. A team touches the volleyclub four times before returning it to the opponents.
  6. A player spikes the volleyclub above the opponents' court.
  7. A player touches the volleyclub twice in succession or the volleyclub hits various parts of the player's body successively. The volleyclub may touch several parts of the body at the same time when catching, but fumbles count as self throws.
  8. A player drops one of their own two clubs before they make the pass.
  9. A player who has dropped one of their own two clubs during that point touches the volleyclub (ie. a player who drops one or more of their own clubs is no longer allowed to participate until the point is scored).
  10. A player holds more then one club in a hand during a point.
