Juggling is Pointless

Luke Burrage - 1st February, 2003.

Juggling. What a waste of time and effort.

Seriously, I can’t think of anything else you can spend the same amount of time and effort learning, until you can execute feats of such a high level of skill, with as little in return. Most skills give you something in return, juggling gives you virtually nothing.

Study for years in any martial art and you’ll be able to defend yourself if you get into a scrape. Spend hours in a gym or running every week and you’ll be as fit as a butcher’s dog and live a much healthier life. Learn to play a classical musical instrument until you are one of the best in the country and you can get a job in any orchestra you want. Put enough effort into any academic study and it will improve your mind, faster thinking, more eloquent.

Years of practising juggling, on the other hand, gives you a heightened ability to catch a jar of pickle you just knocked off a high shelf.

And that is about it. Sure, you can impress your friends with your “cool” skill. You might even be able to make a living from juggling. But to do those things you don’t need to be a good juggler at all. You can impress people with the simplest tricks, get paid for being able to perform skills anyone could pick up in a year. Eating the apple, anyone? All those skills that jugglers spend 10 years developing don’t get any reaction at all. Only other jugglers will be able to work out what you are doing and even then they will probably have seen it all before.

Imagine this: I spend years training to juggle 6 clubs. Countless hours spent drilling with 4 and 5, building strength and speed and accuracy. When I finally get it, I tell my juggling friends, they look at me with blank faces...

“Nice. Have you tried 7?”

Imagine this: Einstein spends years studying in his chosen field, training his mind to conceive something that nobody else had been able to grasp before. He finally chrysalises the concept into a presentable form and tells a few close friends...

“E=mc2? Cool, got any others?”

Only one of them actually happened.

J'men fou. Au moins tu l'auras lu en entier et meme si personne d'autre le lit, j'espere vraiment qu'il te feras evolué.

LOL
Hi there,

Having listened to Luke's podcasts, I've started to understand his humour! Really loved this article and, in some ways, it can feel like that at times. However, I would also say that all forms of performance do give you a certain enjoyment!

Keep up the great articles Luke!

Many thanks

Lighten Up
Okay people you need to lighten up. Luke is being sarcastic. He's having fun with the topic. Please get a sense of humor. I know its hard to pick it up from the written word, but if you heard him give a speech on the subject, I think you would find he was trying to be funny.

I think it is wrong to say jug...
I think it is wrong to say juggling is pointless. It helps me relax and I enjoy doing it. I do not spend countless hours drilling, I juggle when I feel like it, and when I perfect a trick it makes me feel great. I can almost do 5 balls and people don't just say "nice can you do 6". If you say juggling is pointless because it doesn't teach you anything you could say the same about loads of things.

Juggling does help the mind in...
Juggling does help the mind in many ways.In fact for my A.P. Calculus BC class we are required to juggle in order to receive a passing grade. I can almost juggle 5 and it has helped me tremondously in math and other things.

Actually, juggling helps creat...
Actually, juggling helps create more gray area between the two parts of your brain. It creates a different thinking pattern, more adept.

You should know
Just three things to say about your statement.

1.You're pessimistic.
2.Juggling is fun.
3.Check wikipedia (corpus callosum)
(only proffessional jugglers and pianists have very high developed corpus callosum, this improves your connection between the two halves of your brain. You can make links in real life much easier.
So you become smarter.

Say again juggling is pointless.

Dear Luke...
...Your humorus aproach is quite interesting. I must admit that I have had the same thoughts from time to time. But to be honest, juggling has played a major role in ho I am today and where I'm going. It has realy changed my life and tought me some really interesting things.
1st)Juggling tought me the importance of practice. I now have personal experience of how it's like to persue a goal. The only way is practice.
2nd)Juggling also helped me believe in my self and built up self confidence.
3d)[really important]I learned that no one is born with a skill or an ability. One DEVELOPS the ablility with constant practice. Everyone can develop almost any kind of abily with devotion and practice.

Juggling is more than trowing stuff in the air. It is a way of life...

progress
if you don't show your friends every little improvement then when you "all of a sudden" can do 7 clubs it is really cool to them. Also it helps you with other activies that involve motor skills.

Using the skills
While it may seem, at first glance, to be a useless skill, juggling is much more important than you could imagine. Yes it adds gray matter, yes it changes the way you think, but think about what else it can be applied to. You said it yourself, if not outright. You become quicker. Catching pickle jars is not all that you can apply your skills to. Once you have built up your accuracy, you can use your skills for self defense. Throwing daggers. Yes it is a little bit different, but you will have a massive leg-up on the competition...o dear god, my humanities class is gettin to me...
