Where to balance a clubSteven Ragatz - 1st January, 1990.
You should choose where to place the balance. The chin works
well if you happen to have a good chin for it and the bottom of the prop you
are trying to balance will hold. The nose has a somewhat comical look to
it, so if you are doing a comedy piece then this might be a good choice.
The forehead is more dramatic, as it is on the top of the body, and visually
appears the most improbable.
The emotional response to the different positions can come into play as well. The mouth is used for talking, a physical activity, so one might choose to do a balance on the chin to imply strength. The nose is a silly part of the body anyway, and since holding a balance there resembles a seal (another silly image) it would seem to be a more comical position. The head is a cerebral part of the body, as it holds the intelligence, so a balance there might imply sophistication. A little ethereal, yes, but significant none the less. On a more practical note, a balance on the head makes combining juggling with it easier because you can see the juggling pattern without the balance object obstructing the view. Also, you can keep the head tilted forward as much as possible and still maintain the balance while increasing the field of view for the juggling pattern.
