Throw height and rateSteven Ragatz - 1st January, 1990.
I try to make constant throws per seconds. What did you think?
Style choice. For performance, the height and pace of the juggling should be appropriate to the routine, choreography and character. For the juggling technique, trying to maintain a single pace with the throws from one trick to another has some serious consequences when you get up into high numbers. I can easily see how someone might be able to juggle five and seven at the same pace simply by raising the seven pattern, though they would have to raise it quite a bit. But, I don't see how someone could practically be able to do the same with anything more than seven. Trying to do nine with the same pace as five would either result in a _very_ high nine pattern or a _very_ small five pattern. Many of the better numbers jugglers that I know, who are strictly interested in the juggling technique, tell me that most people try to do numbers too high. They say that the pattern should be done quite low and under tight control. (One's accuracy diminishes dramatically as the height of the throw increases.) If you are using siteswaps in their purest sense, then the math will dictate a constant pace, so the throws have to become very high compared with the numerical labeling (for example, a seven throw isn't really as high as one might comfortably do a seven cascade.) For siteswaps to work correctly, the labels are relative to each other and to the pace of the juggle otherwise you will get throws coming in at the wrong time. - Steve |
