Passing 9 Clubs

Steven Ragatz - 1st January, 2000.

Here are a few things that I can think of the top:

First off, the start... I'm assuming that you are passing right handed. The juggler with five should hold three in the left hand and two in the right. This way, the start goes right-left-right-left-right- just like the trick. I have seen some try to start with three in the right, using a right - right - left - right - left -. It works, but is clunky. Too, you should look to the future! If you wanted to start six clubs, then you would hold four in the left and two in the right at the start is just the same. Nothing new to learn.

Second, keep your passes in two tight channels. Since triple spins pulls your focus up so that you cannot see your partner, the only information that you have about the pass placement and spin is what you can see at the top of the arc. Make sure that you keep these two points (your pass and your partner's) shoulder width apart at the top of the pattern. If this is maintained, then the passes will be the correct width on the way down.

Most importantly, make sure that you are passing from the side (the hip), and not in front of the leg. Many novice club passers let the preparation for the passing throw swing down in front of the leg. Although this works to some degree with six and seven, when you get more clubs going than eight, you will need to have higher and faster throws than this will allow. So, make sure that the passing arm swings the club down past the hip to prepare for the throw. With this kind of arm swing comes power and accuracy.

The plane in which your arm swings will determine the trajectory of the pass. Since you loose control of the club as soon as you release the pass, you have to target with the arm back swing. If this is straight, and beside the hip, then the pass will be on target.

As for length (long/short), you will rely on your partner to give you feedback.

You may be doing some or all of these already, but in my experience, they greatly influence the quality of club numbers passing.

Triples or doubles are common. Whichever feels best given your style, build and the type of clubs you are using.
