Learning the Five Ball Cascade

The five ball cascade is a hard trick. Depending on your skill and how much time you are willing to devote to it and, it could take years to learn it well. However, you will see progress long before that and there is, to me at least, a magical feeling to it quite unlike three or four ball juggling. When the pattern works, it doesn't really feel difficult. Just... overwheling.

You may be lucky enough to have some five ball jugglers living nearby. I wasn't. Things that inspired me included:

There are also several juggling animation programs which might help give you a feeling for what the pattern looks like. As an example, I've used JuggleAnim, Jack Boyce's Java Juggling Animator, to create an animated GIF of a 5 ball cascade. (For a long time I thought I was just viewing it on a too slow computer, but now I think it really is in slow motion. That's probably my fault, though.)

Please remember that only you can decide what's good for you so feel free to ignore anything you hear or read about five balls. Including this. Just because some piece of advice doesn't work for you it doesn't mean you will be unable to learn five balls. It wasn't until recently that I made much progress with patterns like 5 0 5 0 5 or 5 5 2, and some would say these are among the first things you should learn.

A few personal observations, some of which are - or should be - quite obvious. Bear with me. (Any funny numbers you see below are probably siteswap notation.)

  • Learn the four ball fountain first. Seriously. While it's a completely different pattern, it is a useful stepping-stone, as well as a nice pattern in its own respect. You will also find that it takes a lot more physical effort to keep four or five balls in the air than three. Particularly until you gain control of the pattern. I think learning to juggle four helps a lot here.
  • One problem is how to hold three balls in one hand, and in which order to release them. There are no right or wrong ways here. Experiment until you find something that works for you. Here is a crude ASCII drawing of how I do it.
  • The five ball cascade may need a lot of height, particularly in the beginning. Practice outside if you can, far away from restrictive ceilings.
  • Try to squeeze in at least a few minutes of five ball practice every day. I found this helpful because I could see myself improve, without spending enough time on it to get frustrated.
  • The worst problem for me, once I could sort of flash five balls, was that of timing. Unless you get that approximately right, it is very hard to continue past the first five throws. What helped me most was juggling a slow asynchronous three ball shower (5 1). Try juggling five at that height and tempo, and it should be about right.
  • Remember that the pattern is only as fast as you make it. It's tempting to empty your hands as fast as you can, but the balls will come down just as quickly...
  • Pay special attention to the first five throws. Even when you think the pattern is starting to work you may find that you are making the same error every time. For me it was that my second throw from the right was always too low. Spend some time flashing five balls without making that particular error. Never mind if the other throws go awry - you can fix those later - as long as you manage to break this particular habit.
  • If the pattern doesn't work, try different heights. It's much easier to correct errors in a tall slow pattern, but of course the individual throws are easier in a low fast one. Don't worry if you can't see your hands. If the throws are right the catches should be automatic anyway. Pay attention to the upper half of the pattern instead.
  • If it still doesn't work, try changing other aspects of the pattern, e.g. width, crossing point, etc. If it still just plain refuses to work, do something else. To me, doing something I know I can, or something I know I most definitely can't, are much more relaxing than failing at something I think I should be able to do.
  • Once the pattern starts to work, try to relax and don't forget to breathe. Think of the pattern as a whole, rather than as individual objects; look at its shape and try to maintain it. I used to try and visualize the pattern before falling asleep at night. Maybe it helped, who knows?
  • If possible, attend a juggling convention. Chances are you will see a lot of five ball jugglers there, and even if you don't it's still a lot of fun!

Don't give up. It is worth it.

No resulsts.. need help 5 balls
I have been trying 5 balls now for about 4 days and still no results. I can't seem to get my throws even. The height is off and so is the landing. They all go everywhere when i throw them up. How can i improve on this ?

Re: No resulsts.. need help 5 balls
Just try working on the flash over and over... This is what I did for the first week of 5 ball.... I'm only at like 7 catches though but my height stays same.

Practice, practice, practice...
You can't really expect any results after trying for 4 days IMHO. For some people the 5 ball cascade takes years to learn.

Counting
How do you count five balls?
3rd Jul 2007
Re: Counting
I like to watch the 5th ball I throw. Every time I throw it, I know it's a multiple of 5.

Re: Counting
I actually count the 5th ball I *catch* rather than the 5th ball I throw. I know it's the same ball but it's important to distinguish throws from catches as, unless you're completely confident of a clean finish, they're not necessarily the same number.

ya estoy un poco mas cerca de conseguir la cascada de cincco bolas. Cada día me encuentro con un problema nuevo, pero calculo que en una semana habré conseguido 60 cogidas. Y despues.... pues ha solidificarlo bien

[TRANSLATION OF THE ORIGINAL POST]
I am already closer to achieving the five ball cascade. Every day I encounter a new problem, but I calculate that within a week I will have achieved 60 catches. And afterwards ... maybe I will solidify the pattern.

There ya go.

five ball is so awesome
Five ball is awesome!

I learned 3 very recently, then mastered 4. People were very impressed with 4, so I moved on to five! I got a "flash" on the very first day of trying!

I started by taking four ball and starting it like you do five. Once I got the "flash", it was really hard to keep it going. After a few days of intense practice, I can keep it going until I want to stop. Five ball looks beautiful- if you do it casually in public with tennis balls or rocks, people will be awestruck- they think you're a ninja or something

Where do i start?
I've been trying to juggle 5 balls for a while but i just cant do it - i know how its done, but when i try its just not working. I've tried loads of approaches but nothing helps. How do i get the first 5 balls to go in the right pattern?

Re: Where do i start?
Try to throw 4 balls like a 5-ball-cascade
with a hole.
If you can do that, you should try again with 5 balls.

Once you get five balls going ...
Once you get five balls going the annoying part is the twisting of the pattern. When I was learning five balls I learned to control it by keeping my elbows glued to my sides (use your forearms, DON'T REACH), and throwing pretty high. DON'T try to learn five balls juggling them really low. You'll just make bad habits. I've juggled five balls for 2 minutes, I've juggled six balls (asynchronous fountain) for 90 catches, and the seven ball cascade for 30 catches.

Re: Once you get five balls going ...
Once you have 5 ball cascade going fairly consistantly for about 40 or so throws, try adding in an over the top throw, or try flashing a reverse cascade. Even try doing a 5 ball cascase 5-up, it isn't overly hard to pull off occasionally. Just juggling a cascade until you can consistantly get 100 or 200 just gets boring, liven it up a bit with some variation.

I just need a good long video of someone juggling
a 5 Ball cascade for a VERY long time in front
of a white wall in a bright room.

When I learned to juggle five ...
When I learned to juggle five balls some years ago
I first just throwed the five balls in the right pattern, and let them fall to the ground without catching them, so that they landed in two nice stacks at my feets. I did this until I could do good throws in a fast pace. After this I started to try to catch them. I think I just did this in
a whole week or so.
I think that this practice is very good, because
it gets you used to the pattern in your own speed. It also makes your first five throws good, so that you have a chance to continue the pattern.
If you just try to juggle five balls directly it just gets confusing, and you have balls flying around everywhere in no pattern at all.
You also must have patience. Many people gives up if they don´t se improvement directly. It´s not like many threeball tricks, whish you can se improvement in almost directly. But if you just train on it a little everyday, you will be able to do it after a time(differs from person to person).
It also helps a lot to stay completely relaxed and loose, when you train on five balls. First when you are relaxed you can get long runs with five.

What type of ball to use....
Help! I want to learn five and I am going to splurge on some new equipment. Should I get some stage balls, bean bags, vinyl balls, or what? I have been juggling 3 for the longest time using lacrosse ball, but using them to learn 5 seems a bit hard.

Thank you,
Mike

Five balls
I started with the five ball cascade three months ago, and now i have 690 catches. Its just practice and more practice

Re: Five balls
Mannn! Already 690 cathes!!! That's insane. So vfar the most I have gotten is 15 cathes, because the pattern is to wide. How can I stoip making the pattern so wide?
