Performing the trick "Eating the Apple"

Little Paul - 1st January, 1990.

He's a witch! Burn him!

"I know there are two ways to do this. One by doing a normal 3 ball cascade and throwing one ball high while you take a bite. Or to juggle two in one hand whle eating and then going back into the normal cascade."

There are a few more ways than that... If I were feeling keen I'd work out the siteswaps (yawn!) but consider putting the apple in your mouth with one hand and removing it with the other. The timing of the cascade isn't interupted.

If you're using 2 apples and an onion, consider the mileage which can be gotten from having a volunteer stood next to you, do the 2 in one hand thing, and hold one object (usually the apple) out to the side for your volunteer to take a bite of - make sure it looks like you're "concentrating on juggling" and keep moving the apple around infront of their face so it's hard for them to take a bite.

If you're including a volunteer, there's fun to be had with not letting them take the bite, offering them the onion and pretending not to notice until they point it out to you (which they will) offering it to the wrong side, and then waiting until they run round behind you to take a bite and then switch it to the side they should be stood on...

If you're going to do all that though, make sure you're funny, and that you've picked the right type of volunteer for the gag.

"Which one do you think looks the best and most impressive? Also which one is harder?"

The one I think looks best for "solo" apple eating, is the "throw it high" variant, only don't throw the ball very high, just eat really quickly. People don't want to see you swallow pieces of apple, they want chunks of apple to fly everywhere, they want you to talk with your mouth full, they want you to make a mess of yourself.

The best apple eating I've seen has combined all these techniques, and more. Often starting off with the 2 person or the "slow" versions and then getting faster and faster.

Also consider putting an egg in there as well as an apple. It may be tired and old, but taking a bite out of a raw egg "by mistake" at the end of the routine is a classic for a reason.

Now if you don't mind, there are some people at the door who want to burn me for being a heretic.

Another good idea is instead of an apple use a carrot and flip it like a club. It looks good and they are much easier to eat while you're juggling.

The carrot works pretty good, because you can just store it in your mouth for a throw, and when you bite off the bit, the rest of the carrot just falls in to your hand. I wouldn't recommend doing this if you are worried about the stuff you are juggling turning orange though.

I am not a big fan of the apple eating trick. The best variation I've seen though, was done by Waldo. He started out with two balls and an apple. He took a big bite out of the apple and took one ball out of the pattern. He took another bite and removed the other ball, then he took one more bite and removed the apple core. So, now he's juggling three large bites. He nibbles the bites down very small where they are almost hard to see. To end the trick, he flashes them high and catches all of them in his mouth.

This variation actually takes juggling skill to do it right and isn't messy like it usually is.
